Mounting in an Optimist
A proper mount keeps the phone secure, the sensors accurate, and the sailor focused. Here is the setup that works best for Optimist dinghies -- takes about two minutes to rig.
The Waterproof Bag Method
Place the phone in a small clear waterproof phone pouch -- the inexpensive universal bags with a sealed top work perfectly. The transparent plastic lets GPS signals and the gyroscope pass through without any loss of accuracy, and the phone stays completely dry even in a capsize.
Position on the front bulkhead
Mount the bag on the inside face of the front bulkhead, centered left-to-right, just behind the mast. This central position keeps the gyroscope readings symmetric and protects the phone from spray off the bow.
Use Velcro adhesive strips
Stick the hook-side Velcro pad directly to the bulkhead with the adhesive backing. Attach the loop-side pad to the back of the waterproof bag. Press firmly together -- the connection holds through sailing loads and is easy to release at the end of practice.
Connect to the coach's hotspot
Before launching, connect the phone to the coach's mobile hotspot or the club WiFi. No SIM card or data plan needed -- WiFi is all ezCoachPro requires to stream telemetry. Open the app, enter the session code, and tap Start.
